For the third year, Helen Newberry Joy Hospital is partnering with Tahquamenon Area Schools to bring food to local food pantries with the Homecoming Harvest Gathering Food Drive. This week-long drive will take place during homecoming week, September 23-27 with K-12 classes collecting food items and the week ending with a community drive from 9AM-5PM in the hospital parking lot.

“With 14.2% of people in Michigan unsure of where their next meal will come from, food drives like these are of the utmost importance,” explained Cassie Fossitt, Community Relations and Marketing Coordinator for HNJH, “Students are stepping up to serve their community and realizing that hunger is a reality in every town. The entire school district should be proud of this effort.”

In previous years, high school students competed to see which class could donate the most food items. The winning class received a special lunch compliments of Helen Newberry Joy Hospital. This year, there will be two winning classes, one from 7-12 and one from K-6. All items collected are distributed to three food pantries in Newberry: DHHS, Community Action, and the LINK. Last year, students and community donated 2,520 pounds of food. We are hoping to surpass those results this year.
