Jen Lusk, OT, Receives LSVT BIG
® Certification

Newberry, MI — September 5, 2018

Helen Newberry Joy Hospital is pleased to announce that Jen Lusk, Occupational Therapist and Director of Rehabilitation Services, has received her LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) BIG certification.

The LSVT BIG program focuses on intensive amplitude-based exercise for the limb motor system and re-education of the sensorimotor system to improve clients function and restore quality of life. Successful communication and movement can build confidence and motivation when facing the challenges of living with neurological disorders. There is hope for those living with Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological conditions (multiple sclerosis, stroke). Because treatment is specialized to each individual, it can help regardless of the stage or severity of the condition.

Lusk, who has been working closely with the Parkinson’s support group, was inspired to earn this certification. “After presenting at a Parkinson’s support group, I felt like there was more that I could do for those with neurological disorders. Earning this certification will allow me to directly impact that community. The LSVT BIG program has been studied for more than 25 years and the positive outcomes have been replicated across the globe. The outcomes are amazing!”  A script for occupational therapy services provided by a physician is needed to begin the program.

For more information about the LSVT BIG program, or to schedule an appointment with Jen,  please call 906.293.9231.

HNJH Receives Level IV Trauma Designation

Newberry, MI — August 3, 2018

Helen Newberry Joy Hospital (HNJH) is pleased to share they have received designation as a Level IV Trauma Facility; making them the first hospital in the Upper Peninsula to earn this. As a Level IV Trauma Facility, HNJH becomes a designated part of the State-Wide Trauma System.  The overall goal of the trauma system is to reduce the incidence and severity of injury as well as improve health outcomes for those who are injured.

Sarah Johnson, RN and Emergency Department Director, says, “As the first hospital in the Upper Peninsula to earn this designation, I could not be more proud of our team for the hard work they have put into this process. Staff members went above and beyond to make this happen and we are excited to continue providing the best emergency
care possible.  This designation is just another way we are ensuring patients get the right care they need quickly.”

The State of Michigan provided guidelines, based on American College of Surgeons criteria, for healthcare facilities to achieve certification as a trauma facility. To become verified as a Level IV Trauma Center, HNJH created and enacted policies that were consistent with current standards in trauma care and staff education.

Some of the key components of the designation include:

· Having basic emergency department facilities to implement ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)
protocols with 24-hour laboratory and radiology coverage.

· Ensuring nursing staff and providers have initial and ongoing training in trauma care.

· Having developed transfer agreements for patients requiring more comprehensive care at a Level I, II, or III Trauma Center.

· Being involved with prevention efforts and having an active outreach program for referring communities.

What does the Level IV Trauma Facility mean for patients? The designation means that critical patients can come to HNJH, be stabilized, and then transferred to a Level I, II, or III facility as necessary. This is similar to what our Emergency Department currently does, but the main difference is the extensive training staff went through to earn this designation.

In the Upper Peninsula, healthcare facilities are geographically further apart, which makes it even more
important to have a clearly defined trauma program.

Now Golden Leaves Living Center, the Annex was constructed in 1988 with the support of community members. The Hospital Board of Trustees during construction were Delbert Musgrave, Lois Michelin, Donald Pentland, Joan Clark, Christine Elsner, Howard Fuller, Robert D. Gibson, MD, Ernest Hetrick, Thomas W.
