The HNJH Diabetes Education program provides support and information to diabetic persons and their families. Click here to listen to audio.


Diabetes Education services are provided by appointment with Diabetes Nurse Educator, Lynn Kihm, RN, CDE. Other participating staff include Registered Dietitian Marlie Carlson, RD, CDE; Registered Pharmacist Mark Fischer, Pharm.D.; and Physical Therapist Pam Brown, PT.

“Life with Diabetes” Classes are designed to educate people with diabetes and their families about this disease, providing an opportunity to talk with others about diabetes. Participants will gain a better understanding of the disease, learn how to maintain various aspects of their health (including physical and emotional), develop skills to help control the disease, and develop a self-management plan to help prevent complications. Class topics include, but are not limited to:

  • the nature of the disease
  • coping with diabetes
  • diet and meal planning
  • insulin, oral medications and blood sugar reactions
  • tests and control of diabetes
  • exercise and sick-day management

 

An adult support group (hosting special diabetes programs and providing informative speakers)meets the Second Thursday of each month at the Hospital in the Huron Conference Room. These meetings take place at 12:00 noon until approximately 2:00pm and include lunch.
