HNJH employees provided over 2,838 pounds of food/non-perishable items to the local food bank (DHS) during the MHA 2010 Harvest Gathering Food Drive.
Each Christmas, Hospital employees provide gifts to needy area residents through the annual Giving Tree Program. In 2010, gifts were provided to 17 families (65 adults and children).
Annually, the Hospital coordinates and participates in health fairs and business shows in several of our local communities (i.e., Grand Marais, Engadine, Paradise, Newberry); the hospital also provides Community Health Screenings (blood pressures, cholesterol screening, bmi, diabetes education, hospital information) in our service area - Curtis, Engadine, Grand Marais, Newberry, and Paradise. In 2010, the Community Health Screenings provided service to 171 participants.
In 2010, the Hospital provided training CPR training to 256 local health professionals and 226 community members; First Aid training was provided to another 118 individuals; 24 health professionals were trained in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), and 31 were trained in PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
HNJH provides flu shot clinics each year; in 2010, 307 community members were immunized against the common flu and H1N1.
In 2010, 125 low-cost Sports Physicals were provided to area student athletes.
The Hospital trained/graduated 32 CNAs in 2010.
The Hospital provides internship opportunities to LPNs, RNs, EMTs, and Paramedics, Rehabilitation, Laboratory and Radiology students. HNJH continues to serve as a training site for Rural Health Training for medical students between their first and second year through the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
The Hospital graduated 7 from the Paramedic Training Program with another class to begin April 2011.
Helen Newberry Joy provided or hosted a number of support and educational programs including Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue, Health Heart, Diabetes Education, Stroke Awareness, Weight Loss, and Cancer Support.
Helen Newberry Joy provides opportunities for students to learn more about the healthcare field through Career Day activities through TAS and LSSU.
The Hospital hosts and/or provides meeting space for area groups including the Newberry Area Ministerial Association, the Newberry Garden Club, Tahquamenon Area Youth Hockey Association, and AARP Safe Driving Classes.
HNJH produces/sponsors many community events. In 2010, that included the annual Community Appreciation Day (July 4th) festivities (Newberry), the annual Tri-Lakes Triathlon (Curtis), the annual Motorcycle & Classic Car Ride for Diabetes, the annual Walk for Diabetes, and the Foundation Golf Outing.
The Hospital serves as a major sponsor for numerous area groups including, Newberry Area Chamber of Commerce activities, Sports Boosters for Newberry, Engadine, Grand Marais and Paradise; Band Boosters activities for Newberry and Engadine; graduation activities for Newberry, Engadine and Paradise.
HNJH makes over $21,000 available annually for Health Career Support Grants for individuals seek to become nurses, laboratory techs, and radiology techs.
HNJH provided Health Career Scholarships totaling $4,300 to twelve students pursuing healthcare careers.
The Hospital continues to serve as a training site for Michigan Works!, placing community members in “Work Experience” and “on the job training” programs. Qualified participants are often hired into regular Hospital positions if available, upon completion of their training.
