Shaping Our Children’s Future
Michigan has weighed in as one of the top ten heaviest states for the past 14 years. With 24% of Michigan's high school students overweight, or at risk for becoming overweight, health experts are gearing healthy living programs toward a younger population.

Shaping Our Children’s Future, a weight management program, educates youth (ages 7 to 17) and their families about how lifestyle changes today can lead to a healthier life tomorrow.
Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, and its consortium partners, Marquette General Health System and Mackinac Straits Hospital, will work together to help reduce the proportion of children and adolescents who are overweight or obese in Luce, Mackinac, and Marquette Counties through this educational program.
The program in Newberry includes personalized assessments and plans for nutrition and fitness, 3-month Wellness Center membership, and medical supervision and group classes.
Program activities will seek to increase the skills of parents to provide effective leadership with their children on managing healthy eating, provide community screenings for risk factors associated with obesity, and offer a comprehensive 12-week program for at-risk children and their families.
This program brings a multi-disciplinary weight management team to rural communities including physicians, nurses, behavioral health specialists and exercise specialists to help children and their families to adapt a healthier life style.  To learn more about this program click on the following links:
